Scurlock was born in January 11, 1850 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, and died on July 25, 1929, in Eastland Texas, where he was buried.<\/p>\n<p>Scurlock&#8217;s claim to fame comes from his participation in the Lincoln County War. \u00a0He was a founding member of the Regulators and their third and last leader. \u00a0He had medical training, which earned him the nickname &#8220;Doc&#8221;.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/dispatches\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Doc-Scurlock-young.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-212\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-212\" src=\"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/dispatches\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Doc-Scurlock-young.jpg\" alt=\"Doc Scurlock young\" width=\"138\" height=\"186\" \/><\/a>Being a Regulator, Scurlock fought for the McSween-Tunstall faction. \u00a0He had a active career before getting involved in the Lincoln County War, but that&#8217;s the subject of a different (future) post.<\/p>\n<p>After Dick Brewer was killed in the shootout at Blazer&#8217;s Mill, Scurlock assumed leadership of the group. \u00a0It wasn&#8217;t long before he decided to extend his life expectancy and leave the area. \u00a0He went to Texas, where he died in Eastland, a respected member of the community.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/dispatches\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20160313_090244-1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-219\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-219 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/dispatches\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20160313_090244-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"20160313_090244\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/dispatches\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20160313_090244-1-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/dispatches\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20160313_090244-1-768x432.jpg 768w, http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/dispatches\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20160313_090244-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/dispatches\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20160313_090244-1-624x351.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Scurlock&#8217;s grave is pretty easy to find. \u00a0Straight ahead as you enter the Eastland cemetery there&#8217;s a group of flags on the right, with monuments to each war going back to the Mexican War. \u00a0(There are two Mexican War veterans buried in the cemetery.) \u00a0On the corner by the flags you&#8217;ll find the directory for the cemetery. \u00a0The Scurlock family plot is at about a 45-degree angle to the corner. \u00a0It&#8217;s pretty easy to find. \u00a0The headstone is large and the name &#8220;Scurlock&#8221; is carved in large letters on both sides of the stone.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/dispatches\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20160313_090157.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-215\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-215\" src=\"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/dispatches\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20160313_090157-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"20160313_090157\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/dispatches\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20160313_090157-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/dispatches\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20160313_090157-768x432.jpg 768w, http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/dispatches\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20160313_090157-1024x576.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/dispatches\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20160313_090157-624x351.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>There&#8217;s a sign mentioning Scurlock&#8217;s association with Billy the Kid. \u00a0You can see it in the above photo if you look carefully. \u00a0It&#8217;s the white rectangle just below the trees to right of center.
