{"id":1242,"date":"2016-06-07T06:28:35","date_gmt":"2016-06-07T11:28:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/futurespastandpresent\/?p=1242"},"modified":"2016-06-05T17:06:52","modified_gmt":"2016-06-05T22:06:52","slug":"just-one-damned-thing-after-another","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/futurespastandpresent\/just-one-damned-thing-after-another\/","title":{"rendered":"<em>Just One Damned Thing After Another<\/em>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/futurespastandpresent\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Just-One-Damned-Thing-After-Another.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1243 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/futurespastandpresent\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Just-One-Damned-Thing-After-Another-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Just One Damned Thing After Another\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Damned-Thing-After-Another-Chronicles-ebook\/dp\/B017YA73OO?ie=UTF8&amp;keywords=just%20one%20damned%20thing%20after%20another%20by%20jodi%20taylor&amp;qid=1465162207&amp;ref_=sr_1_1&amp;s=books&amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Just One Damned Thing After Another<\/em><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jodi-taylor.com\/?cat=2\" target=\"_blank\">Jodi Taylor<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nightshadebooks.com\" target=\"_blank\">Night Shade Books<\/a><br \/>\nTrade Paperback $12.99<br \/>\nEbook $3.99<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d like to thank Brianna Scharfenberg at Night Shade Books for sending me the review copy of <em>Just One Damned Thing After Another<\/em>. \u00a0This is one of the most refreshing books I&#8217;ve read in a long time. \u00a0It&#8217;s a rare book that can make me laugh out loud (more than once) and a few chapters later nearly make me cry.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re a fan of time travel, or if you&#8217;re a fan of madcap British comedies, or better yet if you&#8217;re a fan of both, then you&#8217;ll want to check out <em>The Chronicles of St. Mary&#8217;s<\/em>, of which <em>Just One Damned Thing After Another<\/em> is the first volume. \u00a0It goes on sale in the US today (June 7). \u00a0The title is from a quote by Arnold Toynbee.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Madeliene Maxwell, AKA Max, is recruited for a position at St. Mary&#8217;s Academy. \u00a0It&#8217;s not until she gets accepted that she finds out that her background in history is going to be put to use in a way she never expected. \u00a0She&#8217;s been hired by a time traveling outfit.<\/p>\n<p>As is often the case with time travel stories, there are plots within plots in this book. \u00a0There&#8217;s another group of time travelers, and they aren&#8217;t nice. \u00a0They may have people planted in St. Mary&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to describe the plot, because like I said, there are plots within plots. \u00a0Things loop back to previous details that you didn&#8217;t realize were important. \u00a0So I&#8217;m going to focus on other aspects of the story. \u00a0You&#8217;ll just have to take my word that most of the main (more immediate?) plotlines get resolved.<\/p>\n<p>The thing that makes this book such a joy, at least for me, is the wonderful British sense of humor that comes through. \u00a0And yes, there is defnitely a difference between American and British humor. \u00a0I watched British comedies on Sunday nights on the Dallas PBS affiliate for years when I was younger, so my sense of humor is a little different than most and perfect for this book.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier I said this book made me laugh out loud. \u00a0I&#8217;m a hard sell for humor. \u00a0I can often see the humor in a book, but I rarely laugh out loud. \u00a0An occasional chuckle is the best most humor authors can do. \u00a0I laughed more than once.<\/p>\n<p>And, yes, at one point, when things for Max were the bleakest, I almost cried. \u00a0Off the top of my head, the only other author that has gotten that wide a reaction from me in a single work is Lee Martindale.<\/p>\n<p>If you take the Marx Brothers and mix them with <em>The Big Bang Theory,<\/em>\u00a0throw in a dash of <em>Raiders of the Lost Ark<\/em> and<em> Jurassic Park<\/em>, you&#8217;d have a glimpse of what this book is like. \u00a0It was loads of fun. \u00a0This is the first US publication of <em>Just One Damned Thing After Another<\/em>. \u00a0It&#8217;s been in print in England for a few years now. \u00a0There are seven volumes with more on the way. \u00a0I&#8217;m looking forward to reading all of them.<\/p>\n<p>Jodi Taylor wrote on a page in the front of the book: \u00a0&#8220;I made all of this up. \u00a0Historians and physicists &#8211;
