{"id":1315,"date":"2017-03-10T08:08:39","date_gmt":"2017-03-10T14:08:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/futurespastandpresent\/?p=1315"},"modified":"2017-03-08T22:11:18","modified_gmt":"2017-03-09T04:11:18","slug":"kuttners-baldy-series-three-blind-mice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/futurespastandpresent\/kuttners-baldy-series-three-blind-mice\/","title":{"rendered":"Kuttner&#8217;s Baldy Series:  &#8220;Three Blind Mice&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/futurespastandpresent\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/ASF_0175.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1317 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/futurespastandpresent\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/ASF_0175-218x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"218\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/futurespastandpresent\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/ASF_0175-218x300.jpg 218w, http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/futurespastandpresent\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/ASF_0175.jpg 363w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 218px) 100vw, 218px\" \/><\/a>&#8220;Three Blind Mice&#8221;<br \/>\nOriginally published in Astounding Science Fiction, June 1945, as by Lewis Padgett<\/p>\n<p>This story takes place about a generation, maybe two, after the events of the first story, <a href=\"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/futurespastandpresent\/kuttners-baldy-series-the-pipers-son\/\">&#8220;The Piper&#8217;s Son&#8221;<\/a>.\u00a0 The stories in this series present the highlights of the history of the Baldies for the first two hundred and fifty or so years after their mutation brought them forth.\u00a0 As in the last post, there will be spoiler below the READ MORE link.<\/p>\n<p>David Barton is a big game hunter who captures animals and brings them back to North America (the US no longer exists as we would recognize it) for various zoos.\u00a0 It&#8217;s how he has managed to adjust and adapt to his mutation.\u00a0 He&#8217;s channeled is aggressiveness into something product, an accomplish necessary for a Baldy to survive.<\/p>\n<p>The story opens with him bringing a load of animals to a town in the rocky mountains.\u00a0 He&#8217;s flying in, looking forward to having catfish at a restaurant he knows, when he&#8217;s contacted telepathically by a woman he&#8217;s not met before.\u00a0 Her name is Sue Connaught, and she wants to meet him in person.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>They arrange to meet, and Sue tells David that there is a new frequency that a trio of telepaths are using to communicate, one that none of the other Baldies know about.\u00a0 None except one girl named Melissa Carr.\u00a0 The three men who have discovered this new wavelength aren&#8217;t aware of her.\u00a0 They&#8217;re planning on forming an organization to overthrow normal humans. This is a threat to Baldies everywhere.\u00a0 Melissa either doesn&#8217;t know or won&#8217;t say how she can pick up their thoughts, just that she has and she&#8217;s scared.\u00a0 She reached out to Sue, and Sue found out about Dave from a mutual friend.\u00a0 Sue doesn&#8217;t know much about Melissa.\u00a0 The girl is not what you could call forthcoming.<\/p>\n<p>The problem Dave faces is that if anything happens to one of the men, the Three Blind Mice of the title, the others will be alerted.\u00a0 They aren&#8217;t in the same location.\u00a0 Dave uses the mutual friend he shares with Sue to find out about the first man.\u00a0 He appears to be the weak link in the trio.<\/p>\n<p>Baldies don&#8217;t duel.\u00a0 It would give them an unfair advantage over ordinary humans.\u00a0 But they can duel each other.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not normally done, but there&#8217;s nothing that says it would be unfair.\u00a0 David challenges the first man to a duel and wins, but he&#8217;s not able to keep from revealing himself to the other two.\u00a0 They come after him and Sue.\u00a0 David is flying back to protect Sue when his copter is taken down by the other two men.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately David is able to force the crash landing of both their machines into the zoo.\u00a0 And David is an expert at dealing with animals.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_947\" style=\"width: 263px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/futurespastandpresent\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/kuttnermoore.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-947\" class=\"wp-image-947 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/futurespastandpresent\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/kuttnermoore-253x300.jpg\" width=\"253\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/futurespastandpresent\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/kuttnermoore-253x300.jpg 253w, http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/futurespastandpresent\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/kuttnermoore.jpg 270w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 253px) 100vw, 253px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-947\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Henry Kuttner and C. L.
