{"id":911,"date":"2013-09-15T22:06:28","date_gmt":"2013-09-16T03:06:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/futurespastandpresent\/?p=911"},"modified":"2013-09-15T22:06:28","modified_gmt":"2013-09-16T03:06:28","slug":"what-is-science-fiction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/futurespastandpresent\/what-is-science-fiction\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Science Fiction?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A couple of weeks ago, over at <em>Amazing Stories<\/em> (TM), Paul Cook stirred up a great deal of controversy when <a title=\"Amazing Stories - When Science Fiction Isn't Science Fiction\" href=\"http:\/\/amazingstoriesmag.com\/2013\/09\/science-fiction-science-fiction\/\" target=\"_blank\">he took some well known authors to task<\/a> for writing what he viewed as something other than science fiction.\u00a0 The well-known included Gene Wolfe, Lois McMaster Bujold, and Sharon Lee &amp; Steve MIller.\u00a0 Of course there was a reaction, <a title=\"Amazing Stories - When Science Fiction Is Science Fiction\" href=\"http:\/\/amazingstoriesmag.com\/2013\/09\/science-fiction-science-fiction-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">including this rebuttal <\/a>at Amazing by Nina Munteneau; in other places <a title=\"According to Hoyt\" href=\"http:\/\/accordingtohoyt.com\/2013\/09\/05\/the-auditors-and-their-measuring\/\" target=\"_blank\">this one<\/a> and <a title=\"Mad Genius Club\" href=\"http:\/\/madgeniusclub.com\/2013\/09\/05\/is-it-a-bird-or-is-it-a-fish\/\" target=\"_blank\">this one<\/a> as well.\u00a0 I&#8217;m sure there were people voicing their thoughts in parts of the interweb I don&#8217;t go into after dark.\u00a0 (Or before dark, either.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/futurespastandpresent\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Gateway.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-905 alignleft\" alt=\"Gateway\" src=\"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/futurespastandpresent\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Gateway.jpg\" width=\"174\" height=\"289\" \/><\/a>I&#8217;d already been thinking along these lines, and I&#8217;m ready to put my thoughts down in writing, if for no other reason than to get them out of my head.<\/p>\n<p>I like cross-genre writing.\u00a0 While none of you have seen any of them yet, much of the fiction I attempt to write is a blend of mystery and some other genre, with the mystery being the secondary genre.\u00a0 In fact the second and third longest things I&#8217;ve ever written, and the two longest things I&#8217;ve actually completed, are a science fiction private eye story and a fantasy who-done-it.\u00a0 You may see the latter soon.\u00a0 Both are too short for traditional publishing and too long for the short fiction markets.<\/p>\n<p>I also like my science fiction pure, like the high end product you can only buy on the schoolyards in the rich part of town.\u00a0 Err&#8230;forget I said that.<\/p>\n<p>Science fiction is one of those things that people can&#8217;t necessarily define, but htey know it when they see it.\u00a0 Kind of like Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall&#8217;s definition of pornography.<\/p>\n<p>Here is my definition:\u00a0 Any story in which the science is so integral to the story that the story collapses without it.\u00a0 That story can be set in the future, the past, or a time that never was or will be.\u00a0 The story can be a mystery, a thriller, a western, or (gasp) a romance.\u00a0 And of course, there&#8217;s always the scientific puzzle story.\u00a0 Whether the science fiction is the main genre or the supporting genre really doesn&#8217;t matter as far as this definition is concerned.<\/p>\n<p>Now I personally prefer my science fiction either fairly straight, or if I&#8217;m indulging in a mixed genre, on at least equal terms with the other genre.\u00a0 I realize not everyone feels this way, and that&#8217;s fine.\u00a0 If you won&#8217;t tell me what to read, I won&#8217;t tell you where to go.<a href=\"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/futurespastandpresent\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Kuttner-Thunder-in-the-Void.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-912 alignright\" alt=\"Kuttner Thunder in the Void\" src=\"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/futurespastandpresent\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Kuttner-Thunder-in-the-Void.jpg\" width=\"181\" height=\"279\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As a practicing scientist (some would say a scientist who hasn&#8217;t practiced enough), I personally prefer hard science and the scientific puzzle.\u00a0 I also love space opera, military sf, and a good time travel story.\u00a0 I&#8217;m a sucker for a rousing space adventure, especially one with well thought out aliens who are more than just caricatures of the things that used to appear on the covers of second rate pulps.<\/p>\n<p>If an author is a good enough writer to put some other genre in the mix, then great!\u00a0 I suspect some of Mr. Cook&#8217;s objections grew out of finding someone else&#8217;s genre mixed in his science fiction.\u00a0 He&#8217;s certainly entitled to his opinion, and I can understand where he&#8217;s coming from, even if I don&#8217;t completely feel the same way.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NjFzvlSaGNk\" height=\"315\" width=\"420\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A couple of weeks ago, over at Amazing Stories (TM), Paul Cook stirred up a great deal of controversy when he took some well known authors to task for writing what he viewed as something other than science fiction.\u00a0 The well-known included Gene Wolfe, Lois McMaster Bujold, and Sharon Lee &amp;
