{"id":201,"date":"2015-10-12T19:25:45","date_gmt":"2015-10-13T00:25:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/gumshoes\/?p=201"},"modified":"2015-10-12T19:25:45","modified_gmt":"2015-10-13T00:25:45","slug":"finding-the-lost-detective","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/gumshoes\/finding-the-lost-detective\/","title":{"rendered":"Finding <em>The Lost Detective<\/em>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/gumshoes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/TheLostDetective-HC-cat.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-203\" src=\"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/gumshoes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/TheLostDetective-HC-cat-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"TheLostDetective-HC-cat\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/gumshoes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/TheLostDetective-HC-cat-199x300.jpg 199w, http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/gumshoes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/TheLostDetective-HC-cat-678x1024.jpg 678w, http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/gumshoes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/TheLostDetective-HC-cat-624x943.jpg 624w, http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/gumshoes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/TheLostDetective-HC-cat.jpg 1688w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Lost-Detective-Becoming-Dashiell-Hammett-ebook\/dp\/B013RXROF0\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1444694386&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=the+lost+detective\" target=\"_blank\">The Lost Detective: Becoming Dashiell Hammett<\/a><\/em><br \/>\nNathan Ward<br \/>\nBloomsbury<br \/>\nhardcover, $26, 214 p.<br \/>\nebook $9.99<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m a huge fan of Dashiell Hammett, particularly the Continental Op stories. \u00a0So when I saw <em>The Lost Detective<\/em> come across my recommendations on Amazon, I preordered it.<\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t the first biography of Dashiell Hammett, nor will it be the last. \u00a0He&#8217;s too fascinating a figure to be summed up in one biography. \u00a0What caught my attention about <em>The Lost Detective<\/em> is that the book doesn&#8217;t focus on his relationship with Lillian Hellman or his life after he became famous.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Rather the emphasis is on how Hammett&#8217;s aborted career as a detective for the Pinkerton detective agency informed his later fiction, fiction that he may have started writing while still doing occasional work for the Pinkertons. \u00a0Ward doesn&#8217;t think this is likely, and I&#8217;m willing to go along with him on this point, since he&#8217;s done the research and I haven&#8217;t. \u00a0What Ward does say is that Hammett developed his style while wriitng reports on the cases he worked.<\/p>\n<p>Ward traces Hammett&#8217;s career as a Pinkeron, a career that was interupted by WWI. \u00a0When Hammett came out of the service, it was as a lunger, a name given to folks with tuberculosis. \u00a0This prevented him from returning to detective work full time. \u00a0The cold fog and the hills of San Francisco weren&#8217;t conducive to staying healthy.<\/p>\n<p>Ward doesn&#8217;t try to connect all of Hammett&#8217;s fiction to known cases. \u00a0Much of what Hammett said about his time as a Pinkerton operative should be taken with a grain of salt. \u00a0He told Lillian Hellman we quit when he found a cache of stolen gold on a ship that was about to sail for Australia and cheated himself out of an ocean cruise. \u00a0His wife told a very different story: \u00a0he was simply too ill to continue detective work. \u00a0His lungs weren&#8217;t up to it.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, a number of Hammett&#8217;s reports are either missing from the Pinkerton files or simply not attributed to him. \u00a0I tend to favor the former rather than the latter.<\/p>\n<p>I had hoped we see more of how Hammett&#8217;s cases had influenced his fiction, and initially I was a bit disappointed when we didn&#8217;t. \u00a0However, after thinking about the constraints Ward had to deal with in regards to his source material, I think he did a good job. \u00a0Most people seem to be interested in Hammett the celebrity. \u00a0I&#8217;m interested in the man who wrote those great stories and what he drew on to create them. \u00a0<em>The Lost Detective: \u00a0Becomiong Dashiell Hammett<\/em> is a fine addition to the scholarly and popular bodies of work on the man who was arguably the most importatn practitioner of the private eye story.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Lost Detective: Becoming Dashiell Hammett Nathan Ward Bloomsbury hardcover, $26, 214 p. ebook $9.99 I&#8217;m a huge fan of Dashiell Hammett, particularly the Continental Op stories. \u00a0So when I saw The Lost Detective come across my recommendations on Amazon, I preordered it.
