{"id":24,"date":"2012-05-21T03:12:00","date_gmt":"2012-05-21T03:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/futurespastandpresent\/a-review-of-nights-engines-by-trent-jamieson\/"},"modified":"2014-05-23T10:33:05","modified_gmt":"2014-05-23T15:33:05","slug":"a-review-of-nights-engines-by-trent-jamieson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adventuresfantastic.com\/futurespastandpresent\/a-review-of-nights-engines-by-trent-jamieson\/","title":{"rendered":"A Review of Night&#8217;s Engines by Trent Jamieson"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-YTJM-cq7NYo\/T7mk5D9lADI\/AAAAAAAAAhs\/giMXC2v4YJg\/s1600\/NightsEngines-144dpi-198x300.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"border: 0px none;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-YTJM-cq7NYo\/T7mk5D9lADI\/AAAAAAAAAhs\/giMXC2v4YJg\/s200\/NightsEngines-144dpi-198x300.jpg\" width=\"132\" height=\"200\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/angryrobotbooks.com\/our-authors\/trent-jamieson\/nights-engines-trent-jamieson\/\"><i>Night&#8217;s Engines<\/i><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.trentjamieson.com\/\">Trent Jamieson<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/angryrobotbooks.com\/\">Angry Robot Books<\/a><br \/>\n<b>US\/CAN<\/b><br \/>\n29 May 2012<br \/>\n416pp mass-market paperback<br \/>\n$7.99 US $8.99 CAN<br \/>\n<b>eBook<\/b><br \/>\n29 May 2012<br \/>\n\u00a34.49<\/p>\n<p><b>UK\/RoW<\/b><br \/>\n7 Jun 2012<br \/>\n384pp B-format paperback<br \/>\n\u00a37.99 UK<\/p>\n<p>This book won&#8217;t be released for another week here in the States, and later in other parts of the world, so if you haven&#8217;t read <a href=\"http:\/\/angryrobotbooks.com\/our-authors\/trent-jamieson\/roil-trent-jamieson\/\"><i>Roil<\/i><\/a> yet (<a href=\"http:\/\/futurespastandpresent.blogspot.com\/2011\/09\/roiling-adventure.html\">reviewed here<\/a>), don&#8217;t worry.\u00a0 You still have time before the conclusion of <i>The Nightbound Land<\/i> duology hits the shelves.<\/p>\n<p>This is a science fiction novel that reads like fantasy, but a careful reading of either book shows it&#8217;s clearly science fiction (or at least science fantasy), which is why I&#8217;m reviewing it here rather than at <a href=\"http:\/\/adventuresfantastic.blogspot.com\/\"><i>Adventures Fantastic<\/i><\/a>.\u00a0 It&#8217;s different than most anything I&#8217;ve seen lately, further proof of my conclusion that Angry Robot is one of the <a href=\"http:\/\/futurespastandpresent.blogspot.com\/2011\/09\/roiling-adventure.html\">publishers you should be reading<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><i>Night&#8217;s Engines<\/i> is old fashioned adventure, the kind we don&#8217;t see enough of these days. \u00a0 One of the advantages of being in the <a href=\"http:\/\/angryrobotbooks.com\/robot-army\/\">Robot Army<\/a> is getting to read some of the most exciting new science fiction and fantasy before anyone else does.\u00a0 And while not every title I&#8217;ve previewed has worked for me, most of them have.\u00a0 This series certainly does.<br \/>\n<a name=\"more\"><\/a><br \/>\nThe story picks up where <i>Roil<\/i> left off.\u00a0 David Milde and Margaret Penn are trying to reach the Engine of the World located in the polar city of Tearwin Meet.\u00a0 Leaving their companions Buchan and Whig behind in the city of Hardacre, they travel north, pursued by the Old Men, a group of almost immortals who may be as old as the world of Shale itself.<\/p>\n<p>Along the way they face treachery, betrayal, dangers, and their own flawed selves.\u00a0 They change and grow and act like real people.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a tendency in novels such as this one, where the setting is so far removed from what most readers experience, that the people never seem to live and breathe.\u00a0 That isn&#8217;t the case here.\u00a0 David, Margaret, and Kara are all fully fleshed people.\u00a0 Jamieson shows us their growth, using the hardships they endure and the sacrifices they make to give them depth.<\/p>\n<p>I found the books, both of them, to be a blend of steampunk and Edwardian fantasy.\u00a0 Indeed the series has a feel that reminded me at times of Europe in general and England in particular in the early years of the twentieth century before two World Wars and a global Depression permanently altered the national character.\u00a0 Jamieson has a clear love for the fantastic literature of the time period.\u00a0 This duology has strong echoes of Hodgson&#8217;s <i>The Night Land<\/i>, and there are other homages, such as some of the place names, Mirlees in particular.<\/p>\n<p>The pace is fast, the action thrilling, and the dialogue real.\u00a0 I blew through this one, it moves so quickly.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a fresh and original piece of work, one I recommend highly.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div data-configid=\"12080229\/7979121\" style=\"width: 525px;
