It is with great sorrow that I write this post. Laura Resnick is reporting that her father Mike passed away in his sleep early this morning (Jan. 10, 2020). Mike spent most of 2019 ill, and as a result accumulated some substantial medical bills. A fundraiser has been set up to help pay off the bills.
Adventures Fantastic would like to extend condolences to Carol, Laura, the rest of the family, and all of Mike’s many friends and fans.
I’ve read many of Mike’s books over the years. I only met him one time, at Fencon II in 2005. He was professional, approachable, and a joy to talk to. Mike was a great writer and editor. His work is worth seeking out.
Rest in Peace, Mike.
Sorry to hear this. He edited a series of classic Africana including P.J. Pretorius’ “Jungle Man.”
I’ve always like the stuff he did involving Africa, whether it was fiction or nonfiction.
Mike was a good guy. A fan of the ‘bad old stuff” by Haggard, Burroughs and Merritt. He also didn’t back down when mobs of RightThinkers tried to rake him over the coals for him saying that Bea Mahaffey was a beautiful woman. He was also a good writer, though my threshold for satirical/tongue-in-cheek tales such as he generally liked to write is fairly low. A few go a long way with me. That said, we need more Mike Resnicks, not less.
RIP, Mike.
You’re quite right. And so was Mike when he caused all the kerfuffle with SFWA. There was nothing wrong with anything he said. He will be missed and won’t be replaced.
