Quick Update

Just a note to let all of you know how it’s going. We’re all healthy, if a little stir crazy from confinement.  The governor is allowing businesses to open on a limited basis.  Here’s hoping it’s a success.  I haven’t been to a book store in over a month.

There’s a week of class left, then finals.  I’m about to be buried under a mountain of grading.  Actually, the mountain i already here.  I’ve just been ignoring it.

Tomorrow morning I’ll be helping a friend’s mother, who is in her 80s, have some trash cleared.  Some asshat dumped a load of heavy junk against her fence, and she can’t get out into the alley to take out her trash, so she walks to the end of the block and back up the alley. We’re loading it onto some trailers and taking it to the dump, which is currently only open on Wednesday and Saturday. I don’t have class tomorrow, so I’m able to help.

Then it’s back to putting in a garden.  There are two more places to till.   I’ve already planted corn, beans, and cucumbers.  Next it’s tomatoes, bell peppers, carrots, and a little okra.

I’ve got a deadline on a short story I need to finish by the end of the week.

And of course, more birthday and Retro Hugo posts.  Plus a few other things I’ve been trying to get to.  Most of those may have to wait until after finals, but I’ll get in as many as I can.  Tomorrow is the birthday of Rafael Sabatini, H. Bedford-Jones, and Jack Williamson, so I have to do something.

How’s everyone else doing.

I’m happy things are going well that side.

We’ve just been downgraded to level 3 Alert from level 4. I’m still keeping the kids at home and teaching them myself for a little while still, making dinners, and doing the laundry. I think the kids are feeling the isolation and I have had to raise my voice a few times to get them to quiet down. Chores help with managing their pent-up energies. Crazy things online make my crazy house feel sane and normal and well adjusted.

I have not bought any physical books in a while but I have expanded my kindle library. So there’s that.

I need to stop expanding my kindle library. 🙂

Glad to hear things are loosening up down there. I suppose winter setting in hasn’t been working in your favor. I saw your tweet today about moving to level 3 and thought it meant things were getting better, not worse.

We are fortunate here that the mayor and city council have tried to keep things as open as possible. Parks have been open, and there are lots of people walking in the neighborhoods. We got our bikes fixed, and until the temperatures reached summer levels a few days ago have been riding nearly every day. The last long ride we did, we went 10 miles, just back and forth through neighborhoods. The major thoroughfares in this part of town are about an hour apart, so that made it convenient.

No, things are getting better but they prefer if our kids stay at home for a while still even though they are allowed back. My wife and I decided to err on the side of caution and keep them home. We took walks at level 4 and so at level 3 things are still the same except more businesses are allowed open.
