The first weekend of the month, I traveled to San Antonio to attend the 2022 Edgar Rice Burroughs Dum Dum. This convention moves around the country, but this year it was in Texas and didn’t conflict with Robert E. Howard Days like it’s done in the past. I’d like to thank John Bullard for letting me know about it and graciously allowing me to crash at his house.
This was a small convention, lasting three days (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday). Thursday was for sightseeing. We visited the Buckhorn Saloon and Museum in the morning and had lunch there. While everyone else went to the Alamo, I snuck over to the International Trumpet Guild meeting. My son’s trumpet ensemble was playing, and I went to hear them. I rejoined the group at the Alamo.
Friday was when things really started. You can see the meeting space in the picture above. Roughly a dozen dealer’s table around the sides of the room, tables at the back, and seats in front of the screen for presentations. That was all day Friday. The first half of the day Saturday was more of the same. There was an auction on Saturday afternoon, followed by a banquet in one of the Mexican restaurants downtown that evening.
Talks included updates from several publishers about their products and upcoming books. There was a talk on the history of Tarzan in the comics and a very informative one about how to run a fan oriented Facebook group. I’d post some pictures, but they are shots of slides from some of the talks.
That’s me with Texas Bob at the banquet in the image on the right. He was our tour guide at the Buckhorn. He is also a member of the Burroughs Bibliophiles and attended the convention on Friday. (He had to work on Saturday).
I had a good time and learned a lot about Burroughs. The next time this event is in Texas, I’m going to try to go. And my Burroughs reading is going to increase.
That is most cool.
It was a good time! Enjoyed having you at the house, and Arlo misses his pillow.
If anyone is interested, the group that runs the Dum-Dums, the Burroughs Bibliophiles can be checked out at the following website:

They do a monthly pdf email of Burroughs news and periodicals on Burroughs and his works several times a year and are one of the oldest ERB fan organizations around, as well as a monthly Zoom meeting.
Thank you greatly for the kind review. Pleased to hear you had a good time.
I must take this opportunity to recognize event organizer Jim Goodwin who did an extraordinary job to pull things together.

This was my first Burroughs get-together and it was really great. Everyone was friendly and open to meeting someone obscure like me. My Friday presentation on the artist Mahlon Blaine was well received, and perhaps a few folks finally found him less distasteful as an illustrator, once they were exposed to his widely varied career’s output. I hope the people are enjoying my books on him. I distributed several from my table. Looking forward to more such events.
