Fantasy author Tanith Lee passed away on Sunday, May 24 at the age of 67.
Lee was the author of a number of works, many containing a strong erotic component. Her works include The Birthgrave Trilogy, The Flat Earth Series, The Wars of Vis, Red as Blood or Tales from the Sisters Grimmer, The Secret Books of Venus and many other works. Her writing is characterized by lush, descriptive prose. Lee’s work has won both the British Fantasy Award (Death’s Master, 1983) and the World Fantasy Award (“The gorgon”, 1983; “Elle Est Trois, (La Mort)”, 1984). In 2013 Tanith Lee was awarded the World Fantasy Lifetime Achievement Award.
Regrettably, I have not heard of her or read her work, but if you mention her here, she must have written phenomenally. My condolences to her family.
I think you give me too much credit. I’ve not read much of her work, and what I have hasn’t been recently. I’ve been picking up some of her titles as I’ve come across them the last 6 months with the intention of trying to read a broad sample of her work. I know she is highly thought of in the field.
I’ve seen her mentioned a few times across the internet yesterday and people seem to respect and love what she wrote. She is now on my list of to-read authors.
She is one of those authors on my “catch up on the stuff I missed” list. I hope her stuff remains available and accessible. I think Michael Shea’s stuff is even harder to come by since he passed.
She has some work available in electronic format. I was able to find a hardcover copy of her collection THE GOROGON AND OTHER BEASTLY TALES last night on ABE for under $5.
