This will be a short post, as I am visiting family. They are between internet providers and won’t get the bew service until Tuesday. I’m typing this on my phone, which is a bit slow. I’ll add more photos and illustrations and maybe a liyttle more biographical detail when I return from my wanderings in the cyber wilderness. I’d also like to thank Deuce Richardson for the heads-up on the birthdays, as I have been distracted with travel today.
A number of my favorite writers were born today, September 1.
First, one of the greatest, Edgar Rice Burroughs. Born in 1875, Burroughs created some of the most iconic characters in modern literature, including Tarzan and John Carter.
Next, Harold Lamb entered the world in 1892. Lamb’s work was primarily historical fiction, although he did have a few forays into the fantastic. Lamb was a major influence on Robert E. Howard. Howard Andrew Jones edited a series of collections of his work a few years ago. They are worth seeking out.
Dorothy Quick wrote for the pulps in the 1930s and 1940s. She was born in 1896. One of her markets was Weird Tales. In this age of misinformation about women not writing for the pulps, she should be remembered.
C. J. Cherryh was born in 1942. Cherryh is a prolific author author and has written a number of outstanding novels in both the science fiction and fantasy fields.
Timothy Zahn entered the world in 1951. Although he is probably best known these days days as the author who wrote some of the best novels in the Star Wars Extended Universe. I encountered him a few years earlier, when he was writing science fiction shorts stories and the first novels in his mil sf Cobra series.
And speaking of Burroughs, artist Joe Jusko was born in 1959. Jusko has done some fantastic art. He has a number of Burroughs related projects coming up.
Two other authos I’ve enjoyed who were born today are Martha Wells (1965) and S. Andrew Swann (1966).
