An Open Letter to Toni Weisskopf

Hi, Toni.

You don’t know me.  We’ve only met a few times at conventions, and not in the last few years.  I’ve always enjoyed a convention where you were in attendance.  And not just because of the free books you handed out.  You were never anything less than open, friendly, encouraging, and generous with your time.

I’ve been reading science fiction and fantasy since the 1970s and Baen Books since the company was founded.

I want to congratulate you on your record setting number of first choice votes in this year’s Hugo Awards.  I’m proud to say my vote was among them.  I was also appalled and disgusted by the way you were treated.

So I’m writing this post as a way to show my support for you.  I’m going to put my money where my mouth is.  The number of Baen titles I buy annually has declined in recent years, mostly due to time and cash flow considerations.  Marriage and fatherhood will have that effect.  As I state in my next post, my reading habits have changed this week.  I’m going to have more room in my schedule, and some Baen titles will fit there nicely.  I hear that Kratman fellow is worth checking out…

Anyway, I appreciate how hard you work for this field, and I’m going to vote with my dollars.

Best,

Keith West
