Damn, Keith. I was busy writing my own b-day posts in honor of Gene. I read yours and then got back to work. I never dreamed that you would get zero replies on this post. All much of a sameness with the fact that there were only about 30 people at Wolfe’s funeral. If JK Rowling had died, they would’ve had to block off all the streets in Edinburgh (or wherever). Just goes to show what a topsy-turvy Clown World we live in.

Gene Wolfe was an REH fan. When the editors of CROSS PLAINS UNIVERSE needed a story from Gene (easily the most award-winning author in the whole book at the time), he was up for it, despite being about 75yrs old. That should not be forgotten.

Thanks for commenting, Deuce. Traffic seems to be down in general, so I’m not that surprised at the lack of response. My very sporadic posting lately probably hasn’t helped.

I’ve not read a great deal of Wolfe, but I’ve liked everything I’ve read by him. I intend to read more of his work over the summer. You’re right, we live in a topsy-turvy Clown World. I don’t want to even think about the reaction Rowling’s death would produce. I’m discovering many of the older writers were fans of Howard. That’s encouraging.

Wolfe was an award-winning poet. He stated that the little poem that begins “The Pool of the Black One” was one of the best things he’d ever read. Period.
